Choosing a modpack

Pick the modpack first, then the server. The right modpack depends on what you want from the loop:

Tech (FTB Direwolf20, StoneBlock, TechWorld 2) — automate ore processing, power, logistics

Magic (All the Mods 6, Ars Nouveau) — ritual magic, automation through spells

Adventure (RLCraft, Better Minecraft) — combat, quests, RPG progression

Kitchen sink (All the Mods, Vault Hunters) — a bit of everything

Always match the modpack version on the server card to the one on your local install. Most modded servers refuse mismatched clients.

Performance expectations

Modded servers run slower than vanilla — typically 60-80% of vanilla TPS depending on the modpack and player count. A 10-player modded server needs roughly double the RAM of a 10-player vanilla server and a more aggressive GC profile. If a server card lists fewer slots than expected, the operator is being honest about their hardware ceiling.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install the modpack to play on a modded server?

Yes, your client must run the same modpack version as the server, otherwise anti-cheat or version-mismatch plugins will reject you.

What is the difference between Forge and Fabric?

Forge is the oldest modding platform and supports the largest pool of older mods. Fabric is newer and lighter-weight, with fast iteration on newer Minecraft versions. Some mods exist on both platforms but most do not.
